The Shelter Implementation Plan (SIP) was developed in a cooperative effort among the European Union, the United States and Ukraine to protect the personnel, population and environment from the threat of the huge radioactive inventory of the Chernobyl Unit 4 Shelter. At the end of the eight- to nine-year project, which is estimated to cost US$768 million, the Shelter will be transformed into a stable and environmentally safe system for an estimated 100 years. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) was entrusted with managing the Chernobyl Shelter Fund. Initial estimates placed the completion date in 2005, but that date has passed with no information readily available as to the status of the project.
The Shelter Implementation Plan involves the creation of a number of structures designed to help contain and manage the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. This project will culminate in the construction of the New Safe Confinement.
