"Sidetracked" is a 1995 novel by Swedish writer Henning Mankell, the fifth in his acclaimed Kurt Wallander series. Upon translation into American English by Steven T. Murray in 1999 and its release in the UK in 2001, the novel won the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger for best crime novel of the year. "Sidetracked" is the first Wallander novel to be adapted for the BBC television series "Wallander".

During the hot summer of 1994, a violent serial killer is devastating the area around Ystad with a series of grisly murders. A former minister of justice with his back broken, an artist dealer found with his head chopped in halves in his very own garden, a thief with his eyes burned out with sulfuric acid and a man killed with an axe, his head put into an oven. What do the killings mean and what horrific secret in the past does such different people share? It seems like Kurt Wallander has been put onto his hardest and most severe case ever.
