January 27 ,1949 ) is a Danish former footballer, who played professionally for German clubSV Werder Bremen from 1972 to 1979. He was the first Dane to earn 75 caps for theDenmark national football team , and he scored 11 national team goals from 1970 to 1982.Biography
Born at
Frederiksberg inCopenhagen , Røntved started his club career at local clubBrønshøj Boldklub . He made his debut for the Danish national team in June 1970, and was the Danish team captain at the1972 Summer Olympics inMunich . He played six games at the tournament, and scored a single goal against Brazil. After the 1972 Olympics, he won the 1972 Danish "Player of the Year" award. Røntved moved abroad to play professionally for SV Werder Bremen in theGerman Bundesliga .At Werder Bremen, he played alongside fellow Danish international
John Danielsen , under German managerSepp Piontek . Røntved played seven seasons at Werder Bremen, first as amidfielder , but he eventually settled as a defender. While at Werder, he became the sixth Dane to play 50 national team games, and eventually became Danish international team captain.Røntved moved back to Denmark in 1979, to play for
Randers Freja . He was influential in Sepp Piontek becoming Danish national team manager in 1979, when he recommended his former Werder Bremen manager for the job. Under Piontek, Røntved played his last Danish national team match in November 1982, becoming the first Dane to reach 75 national team matches. He was selected team captain in 38 of his national team matches, another Danish record at the time. He played his last time in Denmark with Copenhagen clubHvidovre IF in 1983.He continued his football career in the
United States , but it was stopped abruptly in June 1984. During a rope jumping challenge with his brother, Røntved suffered from acerebral hemorrhage , resulting in paralysis in the left side of the body. He became involved in the management of several smaller Danish football clubs, and served as a technical advisor for theNational Football Association of Swaziland .Honours
