Plasmodium chabaudi

"Plasmodium chabaudi" is a parasite of the genus "Plasmodium" subgenus "Vinckeia".

Like all "Plasmodium" species "P. chabaudi" has both vertebrate and insect hosts. The vertebrate hosts for this parasite are mammals.

Description

This species was described in 1965 by I. Landau. Landau I. (1965) Description of "Plasmodium chabaudi" n. sp., parasite of African rodents. C. R. Hebd. Seances Acad. Sci. 260:3758-3761. ] It is named after Dr A. Chabaud.

Geographical occurrence

This species is found in Africa.

Clinical features and host pathology

This species was first isolated from the blood of a shiny thicket rat "Thamnomys rutilans" in the Central African Republic.

Notes

Two subspecies have been defined: "P. chabaudi chabaudi" and "P. chabaudi adami".
