John Grey (knight)

John Grey (knight)

Sir John Grey KG (c. 1387 – August 27, 1439), English nobleman and soldier, was the eldest son of Reginald Grey, 3rd Baron Grey de Ruthyn and Margaret Roos. He was a 13th generation descendant of King Stephen of England.[1]

He fought at the Battle of Agincourt. He was invested as the 151st Knight of the Garter in 1436.

He married Constance Holland (1387–1437). She was the daughter of Elizabeth of Lancaster, and John Holland, 1st Duke of Exeter, the half brother of King Richard II. She was also a niece of King Henry IV. She was first betrothed to Thomas Mowbray, 4th Earl of Norfolk as a 4-year-old child, but the marriage was never consummated, due to his early death as punishment for a revolt against her uncle, King Henry IV.

Sir John Grey and Constance Holland had at least four children:

  • Edmund Grey, 1st Earl of Kent (1416–1490); and
  • Thomas Grey, 1st Baron of Richemount Grey (from Ridgmount, Bedfordshire) in 1450.
  • Alice Grey married as second wife, Sir William Knyvett and probably
  • Isabel Grey, who married Robert Thornton. [2][3]

Grey is thought to have later married Margaret Mowbray, daughter of Thomas Mowbray, 1st Duke of Norfolk, in 1438[citation needed].

Grey predeceased his father, who was succeeded by Edmund.
