Columbia University .Thomas, born near
Lapeer, Michigan , graduated from theUniversity of Michigan in 1874, and studied at theUniversity of Leipzig inGermany . From 1886 to 1896 he was professor of Germanic languages at theUniversity of Michigan , then filled the same chair atColumbia University . Professor Thomas was president of theModern Language Association of America from 1896 to 1897, and of theAmerican Dialect Society from 1912 to 1913.Thomas edited "
