CLASS AVAILABILITY:The above classes stated above are available as of June 2008. However, these lists are subject to change due to shortages of student enrollment, limited amounts of qualified teachers, or school budget cuts.

INDEPENDENT STUDIES:Since Enfield's Secondary Public schools still run on a standard seven period schedule, there are optional after school classes (that act as an extra period, creating an eight period day schedule for some students). These extra periods benefit many competitive students who aren't able to fit their classes into their regular schedule because of schedule conflicts.

:Independent Studies also offer students an opportunity to become involved in studies beyond the curriculum to explore a specialized interest area.

Enfield High School Additions and Renovations

In 2003, the Enfield Taxpayers Association suggested merging the town's two high schools as a way to save money. However, the idea of combining 2,000 students into one facility was not an idea that was taken into consideration. Although the surplus of money is something school systems welcome, the idea of students getting an ineffective education because of class sizes and lack of materials and space in one building caused several audience members criticizing the logistics of such a merger. It was decided, the two senior high schools would stay separate, and additions and renovations would be added, and the entire school curriculum would be restructured to comply with the NEASC standards. [http://www.journalinquirer.com/articles/2003/04/02/import/20030402-archive0.txt]

The Enfield Board of Education approved a $6.2 million dollar budget in order to build an entire new 20,000 square-foot building as an addition to the school. "B-Wing," which was just a hallway connecting the A-Building to the C-Building would now consist of two floors. The second floor was dedicated to the library and the first floor was dedicated to be four new computer labs and three large lecture halls. This second floor addition included of a state-of-the-art library media center equipped with about 30 new computers, including two classroom facilities for an enhanced learning experience for students, a large student-teacher lounging area equipped with couches and large tables for comfortably seating 40 students. This media center also includes a whole area dedicated to books, so students can easily find them, which was not a luxury found in the "cramped, decrepit" old library. [http://www.journalinquirer.com/articles/2000/07/13/import/20000713-archive6.txt]

The first floor of the B-Building, which used to be a connecting hallway for the A and C buildings is now used as a gallery, with large wide-view windows facing the athletic fields and the Connecticut River on one side, and the other side of the corridor now is a student-gathering area with news and art posted on the wall.

The administrative offices, which was once located on the second floor of the A-Building is now on the first floor, which the main lobby was entirely remodeled. The new career center, nurse's quarters, student-resources center, guidance office, and main office now lies on the first floor.

Air conditioning was added in the entire B-Building and the first floor of the A-Building to comply with building codes. The auditorium and the cafeteria and select classrooms were the only places in the school to be air-conditioned.

2,730 square feet of heavy renovation, and 6,624 square feet of light renovation would create 12 brand-new classrooms in A-Building. [http://www.journalinquirer.com/articles/2000/11/06/import/20001106-archive1.txt]

Library Media Center

The Library Media Center, as shown, is one of the many new additions to Enfield High School, adding two new class-room areas, as well as a large student-faculty study area. The old library was previously located on the third floor of Enfield High School's A-Building. The Library Media Center is an educated environment that welcomes quiet, scholarly activity, where many students and teachers may work collaboratively. The Library Media Center is located in the A-200 hallway on the second floor of Enfield High School's B-Building.

Notable Events

Enfield High School 2007-2008

Enfield High School has gone through great lengths this year to enhance its security and discipline policies. After events such as September 11th Attacks, the Columbine Massacre, and the Virginia Tech Shootings, the school has vowed to make the school a safe and welcoming learning environment for students and staff, through increased security measures, practices of the School Lock-down procedure, and through the use of Security Checkpoints. In April 2007, a student was reported threatening other students. After several complaints and reports, police investigated his home to find a hit list of more than a dozen names. The fifteen year old student was immediately arrested and charged with a breach of peace. The student had apparently been bullied and wanted "to get even." He has since been referred to juvenile court. [ [http://www.nbc30.com/news/13208627/detail.html Police Say Student, Mother Alerted Them To Enfield Teen's Hit List - News Story - WVIT | Hartford ] ]

During the fall of 2007, Enfield High School received several bomb threats, which caused the school to undergo its complete lock-down procedure and inspection. A drug crack-down at the junior and senior high schools was led by the Enfield police. While classes were running, drug and bomb sniffing dogs inspected the hallways and lockers. As a result of the inspection, two junior high students were arrested for possession of illegal drugs. No students from Enfield High School was found to be under possession of such substances.

These alarming threats and scares caused the school to place security checkpoints at all enterances of the school. Upon entering the facility first thing in the morning, students and teachers were checked and screened for weapons, drugs, or any other illegal paraphernalia. Enfield police along with the school administration checked backpacks, purses, bags, as well as clothing on students. This was a safety measure to protect the students from danger and to show suspects "they mean business." For the remainder of the school day, no students, teachers, or visitors were allowed to exit or re-enter the building without being questioned.

After the Christmas break and 2008 New Year, Enfield High School was closed for the remainder of the week, prolonging the vacation by five days. A water main break had occurred underneath the school classrooms, which flooded the entire A, B, and C buildings, the lower basement level, the auditorium, and the gymnasium. As a result of the damage, the gymnasium and the auditorium was rendered useless. The water had caused the floors to buckle in the gym, while mold was forming in the auditorium. Efforts to revive the auditorium are underway, while the gym will be fixed during the summer break. The damage managed to cause two fires at the main building, one in the basement, and one in the gym. [ [http://www.nbc30.com/news/14961888/detail.html Enfield High School Closes After Water Main Break - News Story - WVIT | Hartford ] ]

Days lost due to the flood and fires at Enfield High were made up during April vacation per request of the state of Connecticut. After much compromise and debate, three days out of the week were made up with half-day schedules.

Since the Enfield High School campus is now under construction for the new athletic fields, class of 2008 seniors have gone through a long debate as to where they are going to graduate. Much debate and consideration had gone to have the graduation at the town green, the front campus of the school, and a church in Bloomfield. Unfortunately, the front campus of the school had been vandalized by students with tire tracks driving all over the lawn. The board of education had recently decided that the graduation would be at the First Cathedral in Bloomfield.

On June 20, 2008, a man was critically injured when bleachers fell on him at Enfield High School. [ [http://www.nbc30.com/news/16666681/detail.html Bleachers Fall On Man At Enfield High - News Story - WVIT | Hartford ] ]

On June 25, 2008, the graduating class of 2008 had its graduation at the First Cathedral in Bloomfield, CT. The graduation was a success. Although the class have come through many hardships this year, the class of 2008 prevailed as the accepted their high school diplomas.

During the summer of 2008, the school campus will be under full contruction. The new athletic fields are scheduled to be finished by Fall 2008, the new gymnasium floors are scheduled to be completed for the school opening, and the damaged lecture halls are scheduled to be completed by January 2009.
