Captain Robert Knowles

Captain Robert Knowles

Robert Knowles (died 1812) is a fictional character in the Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell.

Robert Knowles first appears in Sharpe's Eagle as a Lieutenant in the Light Company of the South Essex Regiment and serves under Richard Sharpe until becoming the Regiment's Adjutant at the time of Sharpe's Escape. Knowles, after serving his allotted time as a Lieutenant, purchases his Captaincy. We next encounter Knowles when he promises Sharpe he will find Teresa Moreno in Badajoz and protect her from Hakeswill. Knowles and his new regiment scale the walls of the castle at Badajoz. This would suggest that he was now in 45th Regiment of Foot (later the Sherwood Foresters) and in being the first in the castle emulates Lieutenant James MacPherson. Knowles, having gotten into Badajoz, reaches the Moreno house only to be shot by Sergeant Hakeswill.
