Henry Cornelius Burnett

Henry Cornelius Burnett (October 5, 1825 – October 1, 1866) represented the state of Kentucky in the U. S. House of Representatives and then in the Confederate Senate during the American Civil War.

Biography

Burnett was born in Essex County, Virginia but moved to Kentucky in his early childhood. He was admitted to the bar in 1847. He was elected to the U. S. House of Representatives as a Democrat and served there from March 4, 1855 until December 3, 1861.

He was expelled from the U. S. Congress because of his support of secession. He was later the colonel commanding the Eighth Regiment, Kentucky Infantry. He represented Kentucky first in the Provisional Confederate Congress and later in the Confederate States Senate and served that body throughout its existence. He resumed the practice of law, but died soon after the conclusion of the Civil War.
