The city of York is represented by the historic City of York seat, and the existence of a central seat for the city continues with this new York Central seat. The constituency will be represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

Following the review of parliamentary representation in North Yorkshire by the Boundary Commission for England, the city of York has two constituencies entirely within its borders, this and York Outer.

York Central is formed from electoral wards from within the city of York, namely,

*Acomb, Clifton, Fishergate, Guildhall, Heworth, Holgate, Hull Road, Micklegate,and Westfield.
