Steele is originally from
Gary, Indiana , though she has lived inMinneapolis now for many years. In addition to her successful solo career, Steele is a member of the acclaimed gospel groupThe Steeles . In
1985 , Steele landed the lead role ofIsmene in the touring show,The Gospel at Colonus . She went on to appear in productions ofSmokey Joe's Cafe ,Don't Bother Me...I Can't Cope ,Ain't Misbehavin' , Crowns, andDouble Infidelities . She recently composed the musical,Two Queens, One Castle , which opened to rave reviews.Jevetta Steele has also been featured on several soundtracks. Her most famous song is "
Calling You " from the movieBagdad Café ; the song was nominated for anAcademy Award . Steele can also be heard on theCorrina, Corrina soundtrack.She has recorded and toured with such legends as
Prince , George Clinton,10,000 Maniacs , andMavis Staples . She appeared on theMemorial Beach album, recorded by the legendary Norwegian groupa-ha , performing backing vocals on the songs "Lie Down in Darkness" and "Move to Memphis."
