Agounit is a small town or village in the
Río de Oro area ofWestern Sahara . Most of itsSahrawi Bedouin inhabitants fled the Moroccan andMauritania n invasion ofWestern Sahara (then known asSpanish Sahara ), and Mauritania's annexation of the area intoTiris al-Gharbiyya (rescinded in 1979). They are presently in the refugee camps ofTindouf ,Algeria . It is to the east of theMoroccan Wall , thus included in thePolisario -held Free Zone of Western Sahara, under the jurisdiction of theSahrawi Arab Democratic Republic .
