His father Mark was best known as a field umpire in the 1990 and 1992
SANFL Grand Finals. He is the youngest of 3 sons. Andrew was a keen Adelaide Crows fan throughout the 1990s and early 2000s and was a very talented football andcricket player during his childhood years. In his early teen years, he continued to impress as a promising football player.Career
Early career
Mackie was recruited from the
Glenelg Football Club Under-19 side by theGeelong Football Club with the 7th pick in the 2002 National AFL Draft. It was considered a surprise selection, as he was not well known at the time, not having gone through the NAB AFL Draft Camp.After spending 2003 in the Geelong Reserves further developing his game, he made his AFL debut in 2004, and picked up a Rising Star Nomination for a 3 goal performance. He was, however, inconsistent throughout his first two seasons and was often dropped into the reserves. Despite suffering a few injuries, Mackie started making a statement midway through 2006 and picked up 20+ possessions in 5 straight games.
2007
In the 2007 season he has shown great improvent in his game and is one of the key players to Geelong's rise to the top. Mackie kicked an career-best four goals against Richmond in Round 6, but his best game came during Round 11 2007 when he played his first ever game against Adelaide at
AAMI Stadium . He tortured the Crows with 26 disposals helping Geelong to an important win which has them sitting in top spot after 11 rounds and destroyed Adelaide again in Round 19. He continued his solid form for the rest of the season and played a big part in Geelong's hard fought preliminary final win over Collingwood. Mackie was a half-back player in the 2007 premiership team.Personal life
In 2005, a late night incident involving Mackie, his club teammate
Steve Johnson and the police was reported by the media. Out celebrating Mackie's 21st birthday, Mackie and Johnson were involved in a heated discussion with local police whilst waiting for a taxi in the wee hours of the morning. Police charged both Mackie and Johnson with being drunk and disorderly, and sent both back to the Geelong police station.
