Leatherface (band)

Leatherface (band)

Leatherface is critically acclaimed and highly influential (though not particularly commercially successful) British band from Sunderland fronted by Frankie Stubbs. The band is known for an eclectic style spanning American folk music, hardcore punk, post-hardcore and Dischord-style early emo. Formed in August 1988, Leatherface has released eight full-length albums [as of 2008] . Leatherface's music has been described as a cross between Hüsker Dü and Motörhead,Fact|date=May 2008 a notable element being Stubbs' rasping, "gravelly" vocals. The lyrics of the band often feature far-fetched similes, metaphors, wordplay and obscure allusions.

Though never attaining much more than a cult following outside their native country, the band has been cited as an influence by higher-profile hardcore punk acts such as Hot Water Music and Dillinger Four, and by pop-punk bands such as Lemuria [in [http://artofthepodcast.blogspot.com/2008/03/episode-10-sheena-from-lemuria.html "Art of the Underground" podcast #10] ] . Jack Rabid, music critic and publisher of the music magazine "Big Takeover", once listed Leatherface's 1992 release "Mush" as one of the fifty greatest punk albums of all time.Fact|date=February 2007

Rubber Factory Records released a tribute album to Leatherface in 2008 featuring 41 tracks by over 35 artists from several different countries who were influenced by the band including Hot Water Music, In The Red, Radon, The Sainte Catherines and The Dukes of Hillsborough. It was issued as a double cd in a card gatefold jacket and was limited to just 2000 copies.
