Agoronomus

An agoronomus, in antiquity, was a magistrate of Athens, established for the maintenance of good order and policy in the markets, the inspection of the weights and measures, etc.

The agoronomus was much the same as the Curule Aedile among the ancient Romans.

The word is compounded of the Greek "αγορα" ("market"), and "νεμειν" ("to distribute"). Aristotle distinguishes two kinds of magistrates, the Agoronomi, who had the intendance of the markets, and the astynomi, who inspected the buildings.
