University College School inLondon he joined theRoyal Air Force in 1931.In the summer of 1940, Grandy led 249 Squadron during the
Battle of Britain . In the early part of 1942, Grandy took up command ofRAF Duxford where he oversaw the establishment of the RAF's first Typhoon Wing.He was appointed
Commander-in-Chief Bomber Command in 1963 and went on to serve as Chief of the Air Staff from11 April 1967 to31 March 1971 .Later life
Grandy served as
Governor of Gibraltar from3 October 1973 to30 May 1978 .References
