Rev. Leo J. O'Donovan,
S.J. (born inNew York City in1934 ) was the 47th President ofGeorgetown University . A [1952] of Iona Preparatory School, and a1956 graduate of Georgetown, he studied at the Universite de Lyon on a Fulbright scholarship and received adoctorate in1961 fromFordham University . He obtained a doctoral degree intheology in1971 from theUniversity of Munster inGermany , where he studied under Jesuit theologianKarl Rahner .O'Donovan has held a
Danforth Fellowship , was a post-doctoral scholar at theUniversity of Chicago , and has held several research grants from the Association of Theological Schools. Fr. O'Donovan has taught atLoyola College in Maryland ,Woodstock College , and Union Theological Seminary, in addition toGeorgetown University and theWeston Jesuit School of Theology . He has served as provincial assistant for formation in the Maryland Province of theSociety of Jesus and was a visiting fellow at theWoodstock Theological Center . He was ordained to the priesthood in theSociety of Jesus in1966 .While president of Georgetown, O'Donovan was known for his generally liberal political viewpoints, a strong contrast to his predecessor as president, Timothy Healy. It took intervention by the Vatican to force him to close down an on-campus
pro-choice group, which O'Donovan had refused to shut onfree speech grounds. O'Donovan retired in2001 and was succeeded byJohn J. DeGioia , the first layperson to head aJesuit university.The Leo J. O'Donovan S.J. Dining Hall at
Georgetown University opened in 2003.Fr. O'Donovan is on the Board of Directors of
