Padma Subramanyam, born on
4th February 1943 inMadras , is an eminentIndia n dancer of theBharatnatyam style of dancing. Her father, K. Subrahmanyam, was a famous Indianfilmmaker , and he has introducedM.S. Subbulakshmi on the screen in the movie "Seva Sadan". Her mother, Meenakshi, was a music composer, and a lyricist in Tamil andSanskrit .Padma has a bachelor’s degree in Music, a Master’s degree in Ethno-Musicology, as well as a Ph.D. in Dance. She has authored many articles, research papers, and books.
Her brother Ramji is a talented drummer and is known to play often in
Chennai circuits.During her dancing career, Padma has received several awards, including the
Padma Shree (1981 ) and thePadma Bhushan (1983 ), which are among the highest civilian awards of India; and Sangeet Kala Natak Academy Award (1983 ). International awards include Nehru Award (1983 ) of theSoviet Union , andJapan ’sFukuoka Asian Culture Prize .References
