Padma Subramanyam

Padma Subramanyam, born on 4th February 1943 in Madras, is an eminent Indian dancer of the Bharatnatyam style of dancing. Her father, K. Subrahmanyam, was a famous Indian filmmaker, and he has introduced M.S. Subbulakshmi on the screen in the movie "Seva Sadan". Her mother, Meenakshi, was a music composer, and a lyricist in Tamil and Sanskrit.

Padma has a bachelor’s degree in Music, a Master’s degree in Ethno-Musicology, as well as a Ph.D. in Dance. She has authored many articles, research papers, and books.

Her brother Ramji is a talented drummer and is known to play often in Chennai circuits.

During her dancing career, Padma has received several awards, including the Padma Shree (1981) and the Padma Bhushan (1983), which are among the highest civilian awards of India; and Sangeet Kala Natak Academy Award (1983). International awards include Nehru Award (1983) of the Soviet Union, and Japan’s Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize.
