Janusz K. Zawodny

Janusz Kazimierz Zawodny (b. 1921, Warsaw) is a Polish-American historian, political scientist and former World War II resistance fighter and soldier.

He fought in the Polish Army during the Second World War, first during the Invasion of Poland, then joined the underground resistance movement of Armia Krajowa. As a 2nd Lieutenant he took part in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Afterwards he became the prisoner of war in Oflag VII-A Murnau. After the war he served in the II Polish Corps (1945-48). After the Soviet Union took control of the Polish state and created the People's Republic of Poland, he decided to stay abroad and settled in United States of America.

He studied at the University of Iowa and earned his Ph.D in 1955 at Stanford University. He went on to teach at Princeton University, St Antony’s College at Oxford University, and Pomona College.

A fellow of the Center for Advanced Studies (1961-62), he served as an advisor to the National Security Council (1979 - 1984).

His most famous publications are:
