Janusz Kazimierz Zawodny (b. 1921,
Warsaw ) is a Polish-American historian, political scientist and formerWorld War II resistance fighter and soldier.He fought in the
Polish Army during theSecond World War , first during the Invasion of Poland, then joined the undergroundresistance movement ofArmia Krajowa . As a 2nd Lieutenant he took part in theWarsaw Uprising of 1944. Afterwards he became theprisoner of war inOflag VII-A Murnau . After the war he served in theII Polish Corps (1945-48). After theSoviet Union took control of the Polish state and created thePeople's Republic of Poland , he decided to stay abroad and settled inUnited States of America .He studied at the
University of Iowa and earned hisPh.D in 1955 atStanford University . He went on to teach atPrinceton University , St Antony’s College atOxford University , andPomona College .A fellow of the
Center for Advanced Studies (1961-62), he served as an advisor to theNational Security Council (1979 - 1984).His most famous publications are:
