The winery's very firstvintage was selected the winner of the 221-entryGreat Chardonnay Showdown held in1980 .Fact|date=April 2008 From almost the first day it was available, Grgich Hills Chardonnay was sold on allocation, with customers being restricted to no more than three cases each per year.
