During World War II Operation Inmate was the bombardment of Japanese bases on Truk in the Caroline Islands conducted from 12 to 16 June 1945. By this stage in the war, shore bombardment was a highly-developed technique.
Australian and New Zealand ships along with American air-strikes closed the Japanese air base on the island until the end of the war. The bombardment force consisted of Task Group 111.2, a detachment from Task Force 57. Task Group 111.2 comprised four Task Units:
- Task Unit 1
- Task Unit 2
- Task Unit 5 (later Task unit 3)
- Task Unit 15
