Santa Barbara, California . The paper, which is published every Thursday and was founded in November 1986, has a circulation of over 40,000 and an audited readership of more than 120,000. The "Independent" is also known for investigative reporting on a variety of issues, from the environment to local politics.Although the paper is published weekly, after the beginning of the
Santa Barbara News-Press controversy the Independent has implemented web based columns and news articles at Independent.com. The internet edition is updated daily, and more frequently during dramatic local events, such as the 2008 Gap Fire. According to publicly accessible web analytics, Independent.com is the most read locally oriented news website in the Santa Barbara region. The paper has been described by editor-in-chief Marianne Partridge as somewhat liberal.
