- USS Eutaw (1863)
USS "Eutaw", a 1173-ton "Sassacus" class "double-ender" steam gunboat built at
Baltimore, Maryland by J. J. Abrahams, was commissioned on2 July 1863 with Lieutenant Commander H. C. Blake in command.Assigned to the
North Atlantic Blockading Squadron , she spent most of theAmerican Civil War operating on the Potomac and James Rivers and along theAtlantic coast . In4 May and5 May 1864 , "Eutaw" covered the Army as it landed below City Point, Virginia, and, on14 July and17 July of that year, she bombarded the Confederates atMalvern Hill . Later on5 July 1864 , along with the "Augusta", she towed the ill-fated monitor USS "Tecumseh" fromHampton Roads to theGulf of Mexico , returning to the James River on22 August .In April 1865, with the War nearly at an end, "Eutaw" went to
New York City on26 April , where she was decommissioned on8 May . She was sold on15 October 1867 ."This article contains texts from US Navy Historical Center."
