List of NCAA Division I institutions

The following American colleges and universities are classified as Division I for NCAA competition.

Notes:
*Schools are listed in a tabular format. Columns are arranged in the following order, from left to right:
**Athletic team description (short school name and nickname), with a link to the school's athletic program article if it exists. When only one nickname is listed, it is used for teams of both sexes. (Note that in recent years, many schools have chosen to use the same nickname for men's and women's teams even when the nickname is distinctly masculine.) When two nicknames are given, the first is used for men's teams and the other is used for women's teams. Different nicknames for a specific sport within a school are noted separately below the table.

Division I Institutions

Alabama

¹ The formal nickname for women's teams is "Lady Razorbacks". However, the school uses "Lady'Backs" as its official short form, and the short form, more often rendered outside the university as "Ladybacks", is in much wider use than the formal name.
² Arkansas State will officially change its nickname from "Indians" to "Red Wolves" with the 2008-09 academic year.

¹ The official, trademarked name of the athletic program is "Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns". National media, however, add "Lafayette" to distinguish the school from Louisiana-Monroe.

Maine

¹ Most of the university is in Cambridge, but some academic buildings and athletic facilities, including the football stadium, lie in Boston. ² While national media generally use "Massachusetts", the shortened "UMass" is in wide usage, especially in Massachusetts itself.

Michigan

¹ Alcorn State uses no nickname for its women's teams at all, referring to them solely as "Alcorn".
² National media generally use "Mississippi" in score listings and on first reference, but will frequently use "Ole Miss" on later reference. The school athletic department prefers "Ole Miss".

¹ The formal nickname for women's teams is "Lady Volunteers". However, the school considers the use of "Lady Vols" acceptable, and the shortened form is widely popular in Tennessee and in much wider usage among national media than the longer form.

¹ The school officially uses "Milwaukee" for its athletic program, and accepts "UWM". However, most national sports media have yet to accept this, instead using "Wisconsin-Milwaukee".
² The school prefers "UW-Green Bay" for its athletic program, and accepts "UWGB", but most national sports media have yet to accept this, instead using "Wisconsin-Green Bay".
