Kippie "‘Morolong’" Moeketsi (1925-1983) was a legendary
South Africa n saxophonist and jazz musician. Born into a musicalJohannesburg family, Moeketsi was the youngest of four brothers, each of whom played an instrument. Growing up inGeorge Goch township was unpleasant for him and he was often truant. Over the years he played with several bands includingShantytown Sextet , theHarlem Swingsters and famously the "Jazz Epistles" that brought fame to him,Abdullah Ibrahim (or Dollar Brand as he was known then),Jonas Gwangwa , andHugh Masekela . Moeketsi claimed that he taught Ibrahim everything he knew about music.
