Although it was not Rosanne Cash's highest charting album at #6, King's Record Shop (her 6th release) had the most singles topping the country charts. No fewer than four of its tracks placed #1 on the Billboard country singles chart. They were "The Way We Make a Broken Heart", "If You Change Your Mind", "Tennessee Flat Top Box" (which was written and originally sung by father Johnny Cash), and "Runaway Train".

The album is named after King's Record Shop in Louisville, KY, which was owned by Pee Wee King's younger brother, Gene. A photograph of Rosanne Cash standing in the shop's doorway is featured on the cover.
