He was drafted in the 32nd round of the by|1995
Major League Baseball Draft by theHouston Astros , and he pitched within their system from by|1996-by|2003, at which point he left as a minor leaguefree agent to join theBoston Red Sox organization. There he posted ERAs of 3.52 at AA Portland and 6.98 with AAA Pawtucket. Boston let him walk after the by|2004 minor league campaign, at which point he signed on with theNew York Mets as a minor league free agent.In the Mets organization in by|2005, he put up extraordinary numbers throughout the minor leagues with a 1.26 ERA in 21 games at AA Binghamton and a 1.02 ERA in 28 games at AAA Norfolk.
He made his big-league debut on
