Adalberto Madero

Adalberto Arturo Madero Quiroga (born September 25, 1969) is a Mexican lawyer and right-wing politician from Nuevo León who has served in the upper house of the Mexican Congress. He is the current municipal president of Monterrey.

Personal life and education

Madero is the son of Armando Arturo Madero Almada and Niveves Quiroga de Madero. He studied law in Mexico and pursued studies in Dublin, Ireland and in Seattle, Washington, U.S.. He has speech disfluency problems.

Political career

Madero is a member of the National Action Party (PAN). He has been legal advisor to various PAN public servants in his native Nuevo León and has occupied different positions inside his party including Undersecretary of Finance.

He served as local deputy in the Congress of Nuevo León from 1997 to 2000. In 2000 he garnered a seat in the Senate of Mexico through proportional representation. In 2006 he won the elections for municipal president (mayor) of Monterrey defeating the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) candidate Abel Guerra.

Controversy

His administration of the municipality of Monterrey has quickly lost popularity and come under public scrutiny due to several corruption allegations. Amongst others designating his personal chauffer to the top administrative position of the municipality, the uncovering of a corrupt police network by local media in which street officers systematically collected bribes and distributed them amongst top officials, as well as local media playing phone conversations of a close aide of Madero offering municipal jobs in exchange for votes to support Madero for the 2009 internal election for governor within the PAN.
