Penrhiwceiber (Penrhiw-ceibr) (also known as ceiber/kyber for short) is a village near Mountain Ash, in Rhondda Cynon Taff, Wales.

The village is served by Penrhiwceiber railway station on the Merthyr Line - Aberdare branch.

History

Mountain Ash and its surrounding areas were very popular areas for coal mining for most of the 1900s. In Penrhiwceiber there was a colliery known as Penrikyber Colliery which was founded in 1872 and spanned just over century after it was closed on the 8th October 1985 providing jobs for at one point in 1923 over 2200 employees.

In Penrhiwceiber there is a clock tower memorial that was erected in remembrance of those who served in World War I and World War II and lost their lives.

Penrhiwceiber Workmens' Hall was opened in the village in 1888 and restored in 1992. It remains one of the most prominent landmarks in the village.

Religion

Penrhiwceiber falls within the (Church in Wales) parish of Penrhiwceiber, Matthewstown & Ynysboeth. The local St Winifred's parish church was built in 1883.

The other church is All Saints (Matthewstown) was built in 1903 to serve the two communities of Matthewstown and Ynysboeth. Originally a daughter church of Penrhiwceiber, it became an independent parish fairly early on, before rejoining Penrhiwceiber in 1972.
