He was a member of one of the most powerful families in the North of England, being a younger son of
Ralph Neville, 2nd Baron Neville de Raby and Alice de Audley.Cokayne "The Complete Peerage: Volume IX" p. 501] He became Canon of York and afavourite of KingRichard II of England , and on 3 April 1374, he was madeArchbishop of York , and was consecrated on 4 June 1374.Fryde "Handbook of British Chronology" p. 282] On theLords Appellant rising against Richard in 1386, however, he was accused of treason and it was determined to imprison him for life inRochester Castle .Neville fled, and the Pope, pitying his case, translated him to the Scottish See of St. Andrews in 1388. But the Scots would not receive him and, for three years (until his death in May 1392), he served as a parish priest in
Leuven , where he was buried in the Church of theCarmelites .Notes
