The Act of Union and Security (Swedish: Förenings- och säkerhetsakten) was proposed by king Gustav III of Sweden to the assembled Estates of the Realm during the Riksdag of 1789. It was a document, adding to the Swedish Constitution of 1772 new provisions and divisions of power. The King strengthened his grip on power, while at the same time riding on a popular wave that also meant the decrease in aristocratic power.
Some of the changes included:
* Only the king could propose new laws.
* The Council of State was banished, and the king could choose as many councilors as he pleased (or none).
* Tax policy was still vested in the Riksdag.
* The judicial functions of the Council of State is now vested in the newly established Högsta Domstolen (The Supreme Court).
