Rogério Buratti

Rogério Buratti

Rogério Tadeu Buratti is a Brazilian lawyer and former advisor to Antonio Palocci. He has become a major figure because his connections to the Brazilian corruption scandals connected to the mensalão.

Buratti was one of the founders of the Workers' Party in Osasco in the 1980s and worked with politicians like João Paulo Cunha.

In 1987, he was an advisor to then São Paulo state assembly deputy José Dirceu. In the first administration of Antonio Palocci in the local district of Ribeirão Preto, Buratti was his governmental secretary. In 1994, Buratti was exonerated after being accused of corruption stemming from a tape obtained by the Folha de São Paulo containing conversations between Buratti and an engineer for a construction firm. However, after investigations by the local assembly the charges went no further.

In 1995, he was a parliamentary advisor for deputy João Paulo Pires (PT-MG). In 1999, he became vice president of Leão Leão, a company that was a major financial supporter of Palocci's campaign in 2000. In 2004, he left Leão Leão after being accused of being involved in extortion by the firm Gtech.

In 2005, he was arrested for being involved in money laundering in connection to bus transportation services. He was also indicted for being involved in corruption in connection to garbage collection services which were allegedly connected to Workers' Party leaders in various cities.

Buratti accused Palocci of also being involved in these scandals, accusing him of receiving R$ 50,000 monthly payments during his administration of Ribeirão Preto. He also accused him of involvement in the trash collection scheme and the issues surrounding the renewal of the Gtech contract.

Telephone records, retrieved by the Bingo CPI, indicate Buratti had contacts with Palocci in 2004. However, Palocci denies having conversed with Buratti. These records also reveal contacts with Jeany Mary Corner, who is being investigated by the Post Office CPI for allegedly providing prostitutes for parliamentarians and being paid with funds from the accounts of Marcos Valério.
