Pierson B. Reading

Pierson B. Reading

Pierson Barton Reading (November 26, 1816-1868) was an early California pioneer. An admirer of John Sutter, he received a Mexican land grant in 1844 for the area occupied by today's Redding, California, and Cottonwood, California, along the Sacramento River. In 1846, Reading was a participant in the Bear Flag Revolt. He was also the Whig candidate for Governor of California in 1851.

He was married to Fanny Washington and had five children. He has only three direct descendants living today, all siblings, two of which live in the San Francisco area and one on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
