Richard White (born
May 28 ,1947 ) is an Americanhistorian , a past President of theOrganization of American Historians , and the author of influential books on theAmerican West , Native American history, andenvironmental history . He is the Margaret Byrne Professor of American History atStanford University , having previously taught at theUniversity of Washington ,University of Utah , andMichigan State University .
