New South Wales Department of Juvenile Justice

Juvenile Justice NSW is a division within the NSW Department of Attorney General & Justice. Juvenile Justice NSW is responsible for the supervision of young people on community-based orders and custodial orders issued by the courts. The agency is also responsible for the administration of youth justice conferences.

Juvenile Justice NSW was formerly known as the Department of Juvenile Justice. On 27 July 2009, the Department was amalgamated into the new NSW Department of Human Services. It was then moved to the NSW Department of Attorney General & Justice on 1 April 2011.

Structure

Juvenile Justice operates under the terms of the Children (Detention Centres) Act 1987, the Children (Community Service Orders) Act 1987, the Young Offenders Act 1997 and the Children (Interstate Transfer of Offenders) Act 1988.

Responsibilities

In New South Wales, criminal responsibility legally commences at the age of ten. Under criminal law, a child is defined as a person under eighteen years of age.

There are nine Juvenile Justice Centres and 34 Juvenile Justice Community Services offices located throughout the state. Juniperina Juvenile Justice Centre in Lidcombe, Sydney, is the only centre in Australia for female young offenders. Male young offenders under 16 are held at Reiby Juvenile Justice Centre in Campbelltown.
