Sam L. Taylor, best known as the tenor saxophonist Sam "The Man" Taylor, (born
12 July 1916 , Lexington,Tennessee [http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:apfuxqr5ldte~T1 All Music Guide biography] ] ) was ajazz andblues player, whose honking style set the standard for tenor sax solos in bothrock and roll andrhythm and blues .Taylor attended
Alabama State University , where he played with the notedBama State Collegians . He worked withScatman Crothers ,Cootie Williams ,Lucky Millinder ,Cab Calloway ,Ray Charles ,Buddy Johnson ,Louis Jordan ,Big Joe Turner , and many more. He was one of the most requested session sax players in New Yorkrecording studio s in the 1950s.It was Taylor's sax solo that appeared on Big Joe Turner's original version of "
Shake, Rattle and Roll ". He also played on "Money Honey " recorded byThe Drifters .During the 1960s, he led a five-piece band, the Blues Chasers.
According to notes on his CD Swingsation, Sam 'The Man' Taylor died in 1980. There are many many bios on the internet that have fused the bios for Sam 'The Man' Taylor born 1916 and bluesman Sam Taylor born 1934. Someone please tackle this mess!!!
