Brenda Anne Marie Schultz-McCarthy (born
December 28 ,1970 inHaarlem ) is a Dutch tennis player. She is married to Sean McCarthy, a formerAmerican football player atUniversity of Cincinnati . Schultz is known for her fast serve, holding the record for the fastest serve in qualifying rounds in the WTA tour. Also, at the age of 37, she is, as of August 2008, the second oldest active player on the WTA Tour afterKimiko Date .Schultz turned professional in 1986. She married McCarthy in
April 8 ,1995 . Thereafter, she is known as "Brenda Schultz-McCarthy".Schultz' career high was in 1996 when she reached World No. 9. She reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the US Open in 1995. She retired from tennis in 1999 with longstanding
injuries . She came out ofretirement in 2005, playingFed Cup and WTA tournaments in 2006. The best result of her comeback came in June 2006 at the Tier IIIOrdina Open in theNetherlands , reaching the quarterfinals with wins over two players ranked in the top 70 on theWTA Tour .In July 2006, Schultz-McCarthy claimed her place as the fastest server in WTA history, recording a 130 MPH (209 km/h) serve in the first round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open qualifying tournament, held in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Venus Williams previously held the women's record set in 1998 of 127 MPH (204 km/h) in a match in a quarter-finals win againstMary Pierce in Zurich.In June 2007, Schultz-McCarthy won a challenger tournament in
