The order was founded by Palackal Thoma Malpan, Father Thomas Porukara and Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara.

It is dedicated to the renewal of church life by the training of priests, the missions, the education of the youth, and social service.

In the year March 2007 the community counted 3226 members (7 bishops; 1510 priests; 40 brothers; 575 students of philosophy and theology; 149 novices; 351 candidates) in 13 provinces and around 300 religious houses.
