Clifford Gyles

Clifford Gyles is a former city councillor in Mississauga, Ontario, convicted of municipal corruption and breach of trust. He was originally sentenced to 2 1/2 years imprisonment, but was allowed out on bail to appeal. On December 8, 2005, a panel of judges dismissed the appeal of his conviction and subsequent prison sentence for demanding and taking bribes.

Gyles' lawyer, Morris Manning, asked the court to overturn the former Malton councillor's guilty verdict, delivered in the summer of 2003 by Justice Bonnie Wein, after hearing evidence the former councillor demanded and accepted $35,000 in bribes from two Malton businessmen in return for his approval on two unrelated rezoning applications.

The appeal judges deliberated for only 40 minutes after hearing Manning's submissions, and ruled to uphold the convictions and jail sentence.

As a first-time offender, Gyles will be eligible for parole after serving one-sixth of his sentence, about five months.
