Futebol Clube Barreirense is a Portuguese institution founded in 11 April of 1911. The club is a multi-sports but the main sports are football and basketball. The club also has chess, gymnastics and kick-boxing. The club has a great history in Portugal and it’s still today one of the clubs with more participations on Portuguese Championship and in Portuguese Cup. In basketball, the club won 2 National Championships and 6 Portuguese Cup. In both sports, the club has represented Portugal in European competitions. At the level of young squads, the club is known as a trainer of great talents in football and basketball.

Litlle History

The football club has gone through many great moments as the title of IIª Division. However, in the season 1969/1970, FC Barreirense achieved the highest score ever in the Iª Division, reaching 4º place. A team with great players as Manuel Bento. The following year, the club represented the country in the prestigious European competition, Cup of Cities with Fair. Despite eliminated in the 1st round by Dinamo Zagreb, the club managed to win 2-0 in the match played in Barreiro.

Litlle History

Over the years, FC Barreirense was always at the top of the national basketball, winning two National Championships and six Cups of Portugal and even participating in the European Clubs Championship twice. On the first occasion , FC Barreirense played against the Spanish colossus Real Madrid CF in 1958 and then with the Etoile de Charville, champion of France, also in 1958. The game with Real Madrid CF was in the history of the Portuguese sport since it was the first live television in Portugal of a basketball match and the first game in a European competition for a Portuguese club.

Beyond these presences in the European Cup of Clubs, the club also played several international matches, such as, with Tennessee and Bittebeng from the United States of America, with ABC of Nantes from France, with Union Marrocaine from Morocco, with the selection of Brazil, with the Antwerp from Belgium, with the Ignis Varese from Italy, among many other big teams.

The FC Barreirense was several times champion national junior and cadets, in addition to the participation in lot of final stages. There is, therefore, that highlight the formation of FC Barreirense that is, even today, the best in Portugal. In 2007, John 'Betinho' Gomes, player formed in schools of the club, was very close to joining the NBA.

=Today=

Currently, the football team of FC Barreirense is IIIª Division. The constrution of new sports infrastructure, coupled with the poor economic climate across the world don't allow that the club is on a place that his history deserve. In basketball, the club's professional men's basketball team plays in the Portuguese top league Liga de Clubes de Basquetebol.

The FC Barreirense was known as a former of great young players that after they stay to the club, developed impressive careers in the service of the biggest clubs and the Portuguese national team.
