Bermuda Biological Station for Research

Bermuda Biological Station for Research

The Bermuda Biological Station for Research (BBSR) is an independent non-profit science and education center located in Ferry Reach, St. George, Bermuda. The Station, founded in 1932, hosts a full-time faculty of oceanographers, biologists, and environmental scientists; graduate and undergraduate students, K-13 tour groups; and ElderHostel. The Station enjoys a thriving relationship with Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences through the Beaufort-to-Bermuda program and describes itself as "an independent nonprofit institution that conducts world-class marine research and education"

On September 5th, 2006 The former "Bio Station" changed its name after 103 years to reflect its new reality as a global institution to Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS).

Research Programs

Center for Integrated Ocean Observations (CINTOO)

The Center for Integrated Ocean Observations is part of an international collaboration of oceanographers and climate scientists. Taking advantage of Bermuda's unique position, their goal is to better understand the biological, chemical and physical processes that take place in the ocean and the ocean's role in regulating the Earth's climate.

International Center for Ocean and Human Health (ICOHH)

With humanity's place in the ecosystem in mind, the International Center for Ocean and Human Health is attempting to understand the complicated relationship between "the health "of" the ocean and health "from" the ocean" on a global scale. Established in 1998, the ICOHH is considered the first project of its kind. Working with experts on pollution, coral reefs, ecotoxicology, fisheries, mariculture, and more, the Institute formed a cross-disciplinary exploration our delicate relationship with the oceans.

Risk Prediction Initiative (RPI)

Matching the Institute's unique research ability with Bermuda's thriving insurance market, the Risk Prediction Initiative is intended to develop more accurate models of the effects of climate change, advancing scientific knowledge whilst informing the (re)insurance industry.
