studio album by Englishrock band The Verve . The album was released in theUnited States onJune 20 1995 and in theUnited Kingdom onJuly 3 1995 (see1995 in British music ). In 1998 "Q" magazine readers voted it the 53rd greatest album of all time. The title is a reference toNorthern Soul , a popular soul movement in Britain during the 1960s.The sessions
Nick McCabe has described the first three weeks of the sessions (which have become semi-famous for the band's enormous intake of ecstasy) to be the happiest of his life. Over time, however, friction started to develop betweenRichard Ashcroft and McCabe, and after the album failed to become a commercial success, Ashcroft disbanded The Verve (though he reformed it several weeks later). Despite its lack of critical success on its release, the album is now hailed as an underrated classic by the music press.Track listing
