nihongo|Future Trunks|未来のトランクス|Mirai no Torankusu|known simply as Trunks, is a character who first appeared in the "Dragon Ball" manga created by Akira Toriyama. Trunks is a half-Saiyan boy from the future, his father is Vegeta, ["Dragon Ball Z" manga, volume 12, chapter 140] the prince of the extinct race of fictional aliens called the Saiyans, and his mother is Bulma, ["Dragon Ball Z" manga, volume 12, chapter 141] the heiress of a massive company called Capsule Corporation. "Mirai" is the Japanese kanji for 'future'. Trunks' seiyū is provided by Takeshi Kusao. In the English language dub, he is voiced by Eric Vale. In the Ocean Group dub, Alistair Abell voiced him.

In "", he is voiced by Skip Stellrecht.

This is the first Trunks that the readers and/or viewers ever see in the "Dragon Ball" manga (he is in "Dragon Ball Z" in North American) and the "Dragon Ball Z" anime. Trained by Son Gohan in an alternate time line, Trunks travels through time to seek help from Gohan's father Son Goku to prevent Androids No. 17 and No. 18 from ravaging Earth. Trunks is a determined and loyal warrior. His name is a play on "trunks", a type of male clothing.

Appearance

Trunks appears tall and slender although still muscular. His coloration favors his maternal side since he has light blue eyes and lavender hair; however, his facial features and skin tone take after his father's. Until he enters the Room of Spirit and Time, and after the Cell Games, his hair is cut short in a Undercut styleFact|date=August 2008. From the time he exits to the end of the Cell Games, his hair is long with a short ponytail. His hair grows unlike full blooded Saiyan hair (due to the Room's year-in-a-day effect).

Early on, Trunks wears a black tank top and black pants along with his blue Capsule Corporation jacket and yellow boots, as well as a sword in the sash worn around his back. After he exits the Room of Spirit and Time, he starts to wear battle fatigues similar to his father's, white gloves, white boots with tan tips, a skin-tight blue jumpsuit, and Saiyan battle armor, which was given to him by his mother Bulma (present time line). Trunks could only transform up to Super Saiyan before entering the Room of Spirit and TimeFact|date=August 2008. But afterwards, his training gave him the ability to reach further levels of Super Saiyan which are located between "Super Saiyan" and "Super Saiyan 2". While powering up to full strength, Trunks muscles expanded and became too heavy and bulky to work effectivelyFact|date=August 2008. Because of this, Trunks was unable to fight Cell without slow awkward movements. Cell acknowledged the fact that he could be stronger than him in this form, although he demonstrated a similar transformation to Trunks' implying otherwise. After the shocking truth about his new powers were revealed, and the fact that he could not see them, he admitted defeatFact|date=August 2008. While he allowed Cell to strike him down, Cell became curious on how he and Vegeta became so strong so fast. Cell wished to test his new form and asked Trunks to reveal their secret. Trunks told Cell what he wished to know, and Cell spared him after relaying a message that he will give him and the Z warriors the time they need. After being spared, Trunks never made the mistake of powering up to such a bulky awkward form againFact|date=August 2008.

Personality

Trunks was born on March 3rd,766 A.D. and is distinguishable from the other characters because he was seen originally to be serious and calculatingFact|date=August 2008. He often thinks through things and plans, advising against random action because of the horrific events in his own time lineFact|date=August 2008 (even though he does recklessly blow up most of Dr. Gero's Lab in a fit of emotion to stop more Androids from being activated)Fact|date=August 2008. Originally, this is shown when he told Krillin to take the blueprints of the androids first before destroying Dr. Gero's laboratory. It is also seen in his reluctance to take action unless Goku is presentFact|date=August 2008. As the series continues, Trunks becomes more confident and less cautious, but rarely loses his rational thinking. He is also seen learning from his mistakes and poor judgment, such as his mistake in fully powering up the Ascended Super Saiyan Form, where his own powered up muscles was his weakness. Despite Vegeta's arrogance and pride, Trunks still cares for his father, even though it was due to Vegeta's pride that he let Cell absorb #18 and attain his perfect form. He still goes to desperate measures to distract Cell so Krillin can take Vegeta to safety.

Unlike his father or alternate time line self, Future Trunks is often shown to be very polite and well-manneredFact|date=August 2008. This is clearly shown in the original version through his speech with his parents, as he is often heard using the polite form of Japanese phrases when addressing his alliesFact|date=August 2008.

Character history

Future Trunks is first introduced right before the Android Saga when he fights and kills Frieza and King Cold. ["Dragon Ball Z" manga, volume 12, chapter 138] Afterwards, Future Trunks along with the Z Fighters, greet Goku, as he arrives from a long journey in space. ["Dragon Ball Z" manga, volume 12, chapter 139] He also warns Goku of Dr. Gero's No. 17 and No. 18 androids. He also warns Goku that he would contract a deadly heart virus. ["Dragon Ball Z manga", volume 12, chapter 141] Later, Trunks, along with the present timeline Gohan and Bulma, discover Cell's cocoon that is coming from a mossy and damaged time machine. It is found out later in the series that it is owned by the other Future Trunks and that he was killed by Cell. After that, Trunks killed Android 17 & 18 in his own timeline. It is probable that this alternate Future Trunks did not train in the Room of Spirit and TimeFact|date=August 2008. Cell then transformed himself back into an egg while activating first Future Trunks' time machine to go back to the present timeline, to absorb 17 & 18 using his tail to absorb their powers and achieve the Perfect Cell form [DragonBall Z Episode 194] . Cell arrived a year early before the arrival of Future Trunks in the present timeline. Future Trunks then returned to his own time after the present timeline Gohan killed Imperfect Cell alone [DragonBall Z Episode 194] . After returning, Future Trunks battled No. 17 and No. 18 in his own time for a second and final rematch. His increased power made short work of the androids and later, of Imperfect Cell. ["Dragon Ball Z" manga, volume 13, chapter 155]

It is interesting to note that he is one of the only main character to leave the series without ever returning; while Trunks would appear again as a child, and as an adult in Dragon Ball GT, he is essentially a different character, due to his growing up in a different timeline.

A special about Future Trunks, "The History of Trunks", explains his early life and about his troubled past at the cause of the Androids, #17 and #18.

He fights Majin Buu with the Z-fighters in the video game .

Differences

By growing up in such a bleak future, Future Trunks is much more serious than he was during his childhood. He also becomes much closer to the Future Gohan from his own timeline because Goten does not exist in that timeline. Trunks looks up to and respects Gohan, but they are not as close as their future selves areFact|date=August 2008.

It is currently unknown how Trunks would react to meeting Future Trunks, however this occurs in the video games ', ', ', ' and "". In "Budokai 3", as well as in "Shin Budokai", Trunks states that it is "Just like having a brother"Fact|date=August 2008 where as in "Legendary Super Warriors", "Tenkaichi 2" and "Tenkaichi 3" he does not even realize it is his future self, and the two have a sparring matchFact|date=August 2008. They did meet in the manga and anime, however, when Trunks was still just a baby; once when Future Trunks rescued him and Bulma from Dr. Gero's attack, and another time when Future Trunks came to Capsule Corp. before the Cell Games announcement. For a minute, Trunks incessantly pulled on Future Trunks' hair.

In Future Trunks' timeline, Trunks becomes more sympathetic and caring than the younger Trunks in the present timeline. This is mostly because of Vegeta's impact on his son in the present, when Trunks is very mischievous and arrogant as a youth, and he also carries most of these traits into Dragonball GT as well, but is still is mostly similar to Future Trunks when Trunks is older.

Abilities

Trunks has demonstrated the ability to easily utilize the power of "buku-jutsu", or "lighter than air" skill, which enables him to fly at will. Trunks has also displayed the ability to suppress his power level, which is seen when he suppresses his power level down to 5, tricking Mecha Frieza's henchmen into believing that he was weaker than he actually was. Trunks uses some signature attacks in the manga but none of them are actually namedFact|date=August 2008. The well-known attacks he uses are taken from the Dragon Ball video games such as Budokai or Budokai Tenkaichi, and from there come the names like "Burning Attack", which is a powerful blast Trunks creates by performing a series of rapid arm movements, then releasing an energy ball from his hands with his index fingers and thumbs touching. In the video games he can also perform several other attacks, which are not used in the original manga; "Finish Buster" and "Buster Cannon"Fact|date=August 2008. The "Heat Dome Attack", which looks similar to the attack he used to kill Cell after returning to his own timeline; and "Shining Sword Attack", which mimics his movements when he killed Mecha Frieza the first time when he came in to the present timeline.

Forms and transformations

When Future Trunks is first introduced, he transforms into a Super Saiyan. ["Dragon Ball Z" manga, volume 12, chapter 137] Future Trunks uses this form while he is in battle. He achieved this form after he saw the dead body of Future Gohan being killed by the Androids from his own timeline. After training in the Room of Spirit and Time, Trunks is able to go to reach both Super Saiyan 2nd Grade and Super Saiyan 3rd Grade, which are more powerful than a normal Super Saiyan but when Trunks goes into his third form, his speed starts to decrease, making it a major weakness. Trunks uses these forms to fight Cell's Semi-Perfect and Perfect forms respectively, but after the battle he does power up to the form's highest level after he realized it was too slow and too bulkyFact|date=August 2008.

Appearances in Video games

Future Trunks has appeared in many "Dragon Ball" related video games. He has also appeared in crossover games such as "Battle Stadium D.O.N" and "Jump Ultimate Stars" In "" he was given his own storyline involving what would have happened if Majin Buu appeared in his future time line. He will be appearing in "Dragon Ball Online".

In ' and ', Future Trunks was able to transform to Super Saiyan 2. However in "", Future Trunks can only transform into Super Saiyan and then "Super Trunks", which is similar to the 'Super Vegeta' transformation Vegeta has, which is a bulky transformation midway between Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2.
