He enjoyed a lengthy career at the highest level, playing primarily as a centre back in the German Bundesliga, ItalianSerie A and for Germany. He was famed for his defensive perception, physical strength and prowess in the air. However, Kohler ended his career on a sad note by getting sent-off and directly causing Dotmund to concede a penalty in the UEFA Cup final against Feyenoord. After his playing career was over, he has managed the German under-21 side, and became sports director ofBayer Leverkusen onMarch 31 ,2003 , quitting this post onJune 29 ,2004 . OnDecember 17 ,2005 , he was appointed the coach ofMSV Duisburg .On
August 31 ,2006 , he reportedly turned down the opportunity to coach the Ivory Coast national team.On August 28, 2008, Kohler signed a three-year contract as manager of German3rd Liga clubVfR Aalen .Honours
