- USS Deane (1778)
The
Continental Navy frigate USS "Deane", named after American commissioner to FranceSilas Deane , was built atNantes ,France , and brought to theUnited States in May1778 to be prepared for sea. She was later named "Hague".Under the command of Captain
Samuel Nicholson of theContinental Navy , "Deane" sailed fromBoston 14 January 1779 with USS|Alliance|1778|2 for a cruise in theWest Indies . She returned toPhiladelphia 17 April with oneprize , the armed ship "Viper". On29 July she joined with USS|Boston|1777|6 and two ships of theVirginia Navy guarding aconvoy of merchantmen out to sea and continuing on for a five-week cruise which netted eight prizes, including fourprivateer s, the packet "Sandwich", and thesloop-of-war HMS|Thorn. The frigates arrived at Boston6 September with 250 prisoners after one of the most notable cruises of the Continental Navy.During the winter and early spring of
1781 and again in1782 "Deane" cruised with USS|Confederacy|1778|2 and USS|Saratoga|1780|2 in the West Indies, capturing four prizes on the second of these cruises. After two more cruises in the Caribbean, one in September 1782 and the other in1783 , "Deane" was placed out of commission in 1783 at Boston. She was renamed "Hague" in September 1782 (perhaps because of false accusation against Deane that was current at the time).References
