Glenwood High School (Illinois)

Glenwood High School (Illinois)

Glenwood High School of Chatham, Illinois is a public school located just south of Springfield, Illinois. As the only public high school serving the Ball-Chatham School District, Glenwood accommodates all children from Chatham, Glenarm, and portions of Springfield. As a nearby alternative to the Springfield public schools, Chatham has grown rapidly over the past 10-15 years. It currently enrolls over 1270, and is recognized by the public as one of the best schools in the area.

History

Once located in the heart of Chatham, the high school has moved twice since its inception. As the district outgrew the original school, Glenwood was forced to move east, where it was not confined by the residential boundaries of the older locations. In more recent years, however, even that location became too crowded. The school district put up a referendum and won funding, allowing it to move the high school one final time, to its current location at 1501 E. Plummer Blvd. This new 27 million dollar building was built to accommodate Glenwood's rapidly growing list of pupils.

Academic statistics

Glenwood High School is one of the top schools in the state, and constantly strives to reach even higher. A few students each year will get 35's and higher on their ACT's and 1500's and higher on their SATs. Current academic averages are:

Sports

Glenwood participates in a vast array of Illinois High School Association (IHSA) sports including: Wrestling, Baseball, Basketball, Football, Cross Country, Tennis, Track & Field, Swimming, Softball, Golf, Volleyball, Mock Trial, Speech, and Scholastic Bowl. The school also participates in Ice Hockey competition outside of the IHSA.

Glenwood High School is noted regionally for its sports teams. They have a longstanding rivalry with Sacred Heart-Griffin, a Catholic school in nearby Springfield, Illinois. Most notably Glenwood won the 1996 IHSA class AA State Baseball Championship, 1998 IHSA Class 4A State Football Championship, 2005 IHSA Class AA State Soccer Championship, and 2007 IHSA Class AA State Cross-Country Runner-up.

The mascot of Glenwood High School is the "Titans". The previous mascot, the Redskins, was changed to the more culturally sensitive "Titans" in August 2001 by the school district upon the opening of the new high school facility. This action upset some Chatham residents who had previously defeated several referendums seeking to change the Redskin mascot. The Redskin mascot continues to appear on the Chatham water tower.

Notable athletes from Glenwood High School include Major League Baseball player Jayson Werth.

Glenwood's sport scene is dominated by the football season. The team has been coached by Dan Rourke since 1993, during which time they have been quite successful. The Titans have missed the playoffs only once since 1997, had a 24 game conference winning streak, appeared in 4 state quarterfinal games since 1997 ('97, '98, '03, '04), and were the 4A state champ in 1998. The baseball team had also had a little success along the way. Guided by head coach Pat Moomey for the past 22 years, the Titans have had 17 20+ win seasons and 8 30+ win seasons. Coach Moomey ended the 2007 season with a career record of 568-190 for a .749 winning percentage. It should be noted, however, that as a football referee Pat Moomey displays an amazing lack of integrity. Glenwood's basketball team has recently won much acclaim as the Todd Blakeman-led squad won the conference title in the '07-'08 season for the first time in school history.
