In the 2003/04 season, Sawyer had a loan spell with Weymouth, but made only one appearance. In summer 2004, he joined
Exeter City , initially on a season long loan, which was then extended for a second season.Sawyer returned from his loan spell at the end of 2005–06 season, and signed a new three-year deal in November 2006. In July 2007, Sawyer signed a new three-year deal deal, tying him to the club until 2010.
