computer games .He is popularly known in the world of The Journeyman Project as "the father of
time travel " because he invented the first time machine, a large device known as Pegasus. His pioneering work became the basis of, and raison d'etre for, the Temporal Security Annex, which became theTemporal Security Agency . Dr. William Daughton later improved upon his initial work to create the JumpSuit time machines for the Temporal Security Agency.Role in the Games
During most of the first part of the first game, "
The Journeyman Project ", the player knows of Dr. Elliot Sinclair, if at all, only as the person who invented time travel. Only once the player is able to defeat one of the robots damaging history do they learn that Dr. Sinclair is the antagonist of the game.Dr. Elliot Sinclair spends the second game, "", incarcerated in Vega Thalon, a prison colony on one of Saturn's moons. He, his robotic henchmen, and the Pegasus device are occasionally referred to but are not relevant to the story.
He returns to the storyline for "". Here the player comes to further understand his motives and actions by watching him in his home city in the distant past; which turns out to be the legendary city of
Atlantis in the year 1262 B.C.His Life
Although this was not known until the third game, "The Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time", Elliot Sinclair was actually born in the city of Atlantis some decades before the year 1262 B.C. His original name was Saros. He and a friend name Padros studied to become priests, the most prestigious social class in the city.
The priests of Atlantis worshipped the Earth goddess, and possessed a relic given to them by an alien race known as the Sosiqui, who posed as this goddess to present it to the priests. The ancient Sosiqui had entrusted them with a relic which had inscriptions detailing the equations necessary for time travel, and had properties that included the restoration and extreme prolongation of life. It was one of the three Legacies of the Sosiqui.
The priests jealously guarded the Legacy, but Padros thought it should be shared with all the denizens of the city. For this position, Padros was expelled from his position as an initiate, blinded, and made to beg on the waterways of the city. Saros secretly agreed with him, but was afraid to speak up. Later, he resolved to help mankind no matter what the cost.
The Legacy was a coveted prize, and aliens known as the Cyrollans and the Quo'thalas both sought for it. They met for the first time near Earth, where they suspected a Legacy to be. They met in peace, but soon fought each other for the Legacy which they detected in Atlantis. Quol'tholos troops landed near the temple where the Legacy was stored, and the Cyrollans destroyed the whole city to prevent the Quo'thalas from obtaining it. Saros barely escaped with his life, and the Legacy was presumed lost.
Saros lived for thousands of years because of the powers of the Legacy, though he no longer possessed it. He was haunted by his knowledge of Atlantis, and the knowledge that it had been destroyed by aliens. In the 23rd century A.D., he became known as Dr. Elliot Sinclair.
Dr. Elliot Sinclair invented time travel for the world government. His first time machine, known as Pegasus, was successfully demonstrated on August 15, 2315. After its maiden voyage, the government decided it was too risky to be continued. The Pegasus device was secretly disassembled, moved, and reconstructed in the headquarters of a new agency, the Temporal Security Annex. This agency would use Pegasus only to protect history from people who acquired time travel and sought to use it maliciously.
There were several reasons for this decision. The technology could be destroyed, but since it was possible to invent it once, it could be invented again. If time travel technology were ever acquired or invented by malicious persons who used it to alter history, there would be nothing to prevent the past and future from changing forever. The world government decided that the creation of the Temporal Security Annex, which later became the Temporal Security Agency, was the only and best safeguard against tampering with the past.
Cyrollans had not been in contact with Earth for some centuries, but in 2308 A.D., they invited Earth to join the
Symbiotry of Peaceful Beings , a federation of advanced alien species. The Cyrollans declared they would return in ten years to hear the answer to their proposal.Dr. Sinclair was infuriated by and fearful of this offer. He still recalled how the Cyrollans had destroyed Atlantis. The doctor was worried that they had not really changed. He theorized that they sought, like many conquerors from Earth's history, to earn the trust of humans, and then betray and conquer the planet.
He therefore plotted to prevent the Earth from joining the Symbiotry. He secretly created a second Pegasus device and three robots. Each would change history at a critical location to make Earth unsuitable for Symbiotry admission in 2308.
One robot was sent to the NORAD VI undersea base in the year 2112 A.D. Its goal was to launch a nuclear missile from the base but then disable the missile before damage was done. This would decrease the speed of nuclear disarmament, making Earth unprepared for peace.
The second robot was sent to the
Morimoto Mars Colony in 2185 A.D. Its mission was to turn deadly what had been mankind's first peaceful contact with alien life. The robot would plant a bomb to destroy the colony, making it look as though the aliens had blown up the humans they encountered. The robot would also pursue and destroy the alien vessel, to convince aliens that the humans were bloodthirsty. The third robot was sent to the
World Science Center in 2310 A.D. to assassinate Dr. Enrique Castillo, one of Dr. Sinclair's colleagues. Dr. Castillo was an outspoken advocate for joining the Symbiotry, and at the World Science Center, his debate carried the day. Without him, there would be less clear leadership and enthusiasm for membership in an alien federation.Dr. Sinclair determined that should all three of his robots fail, he himself would assassinate the Cyrollan ambassador to Earth in the year 2318 A.D., when the Cyrollans returned for Earth's yea or nay. He knew that the ambassador would be visiting the skyborne city of Caldoria, and placed himself on the roof of a skyscraper so he could use a sniper rifle and kill the ambassador. Should that last plan fail, he planted a bomb inside Caldoria, which would destroy the entire city, killing the Cyrollan ambassador in the process.
Agent 5 of the Temporal Security Agency,
Gage Blackwood , was on duty when evidence of Dr. Elliot Sinclair's tampering was turned up by the time scanners. He used the original Pegasus to stop each of the three robots. He used their memories and programming to learn of Dr. Sinclair's scheme, and realized that Dr. Sinclair had picked the rooftop of his own apartment, Caldoria Heights, as the position from which to assassinate the ambassador. He managed to put Dr. Sinclair to sleep with a tranquilizer gun, and the bomb was successfully disarmed. For his crimes, Dr. Sinclair was imprisoned for life upon Vega Thalon, a prison colony on Saturns moon of Titan. He died on November 6, 2329. Before his death, he was visited by Agent 3,
Michelle Visard , and Agent 5. Gage Blackwood also visited Atlantis before its destruction and spoke with Saros.Timeline
