- Yttrium iron garnet
Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) is a kind of synthetic
garnet , with chemical composition Yttrium3Iron2(FeOxygen4)3, or Y3Fe5O12. It is aferrimagnetic material withCurie temperature 550 K.In YIG, the five iron(III) ions occupy two
octahedral and threetetrahedral sites, with the yttrium(III) ions coordinated by eight oxygen ions in an irregular cube. The iron ions in the two coordination sites exhibit different spins, resulting inmagnetic behaviour. By substituting specific sites withrare earth elements , for example, interesting magnetic properties can be obtained.YIG has high degree of
Faraday effect , highQ factor inmicrowave frequencies, low absorption ofinfrared wavelengths up to 600 nm, and very smalllinewidth inelectron spin resonance .YIG is used in
microwave , optical, and magneto-optical applications, eg. microwaveyttrium iron garnet filter s. It is transparent forinfrared lightwavelength s over 600 nm. It finds use also insolid-state laser s inFaraday rotator s, indata storage , and in variousnonlinear optics applications.ee also
