Alexander Q. Holladay

Alexander Quarels Holladay (May 8, 1839 - March 13, 1909) He was educated at the University of Virginia (1857-59) and the University of Berlin (1859-61). During the Civil War he rose from Second Lieutenant to Colonel in the Confederate Army. Following the war Holladay studied law and eventually practiced in a partnership with his father between 1870-77. He also served in the Virginia State Senate from 1871-75. He taught in Richmond for a while before becoming president of the Stonewall Jackson Insitute in Abingdon, Virginia. He was later president of the Florida State Agricultural College in Lake City from 1885-88. In 1889 Holladay became the first president of North Carolina State University. After his retirement in 1899, he spent time in Delaware, New York, and Virginia until failing health brought him back to his daughter's home in Raleigh, North Carolina where he lived until his death.
